Choosing the right level of care

Zimbabwe’s facilities serve different roles. This overview helps you ask the right questions; it does not replace advice from a health professional.

Clinic or primary-care facility

Often appropriate for routine consultations, preventive care, maternal and child health, medication refills and initial assessment. Confirm services and opening hours before travelling.

District or general hospital

Usually provides broader outpatient, inpatient, maternity, laboratory and emergency assessment services. Some specialist cases require onward referral.

Provincial hospital

Typically receives referrals from district facilities and may provide a wider range of diagnostic, surgical and specialist services.

Central or teaching hospital

Generally handles complex referrals and specialist disciplines. A referral may be required for non-emergency care.
